Skype is No More: What to Do?

If you're using Skype to communicate with your 3SNET manager, update your contact details by providing current Telegram information as soon as possible.

Publication date: 5 May 2025

In May 2025, Microsoft will discontinue the Skype messenger service. The primary reason behind this decision is that the service failed to keep up with competition from newer video-communication platforms.

  • Both the free and paid versions of Skype will shut down.
  • However, Skype for Business will remain operational for the foreseeable future.

What should I do with my Skype account?

  •       To preserve all your contacts and chat history, migrate to the free version of Microsoft Teams. Use your existing Skype credentials to log in.
  •       If you prefer not to switch to Microsoft Teams, export your data via “Settings and Options.” Your exported files will be accessible until January 2026.
  • For keeping your Skype number, reach out to your new telecommunications provider.
  • If you’re using Skype to communicate with your 3SNET manager, update your contact details by providing current Telegram information as soon as possible.

Skype messenger is an Internet legend

The first versions of Skype were released to users in autumn 2003. It quickly became one of the pioneering platforms offering innovative features such as video calling. Users could engage in text-based chats (with file sharing capabilities), make voice calls (to both other Skype users and traditional mobile/landline numbers), enjoy video conferencing, and participate in group calls and online meetings.

In 2011, Skype was acquired by Microsoft Corporation.

By 2023, Skype still retained approximately 40 million daily active users globally. Despite maintaining some popularity—especially among older generations and within business sectors—the user base gradually declined due to increasing adoption of more contemporary and feature-rich communication tools.
