Trump Targets Section 230: Social Media to Lose Legal Shield

At the end of May 2020, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order that calls for regulating online censorship on social media platforms.

It is about changing a law at the heart of the internet industry: Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. The law offers tech companies broad immunity from lawsuits and shields them from liability for messages, photos, videos and other content users post on their platforms.

According to the president, social media companies “can do what they want”, but new regulations under Section 230 will make it that they “will not be able to keep their liability shield”.
