Spa-Francorchamps circuit
Spa-Francorchamps is one of the fastest and most demanding circuits on the Formula 1 calendar. The current layout is 7.004 km long, making it the longest circuit currently used in the championship.
The circuit combines long straights, high-speed corners and significant elevation changes. Its most famous section is Eau Rouge–Raidillon, a sequence of fast corners that has become one of the defining features of Formula 1.
The characteristics of Spa-Francorchamps place a strong emphasis on straight-line speed, aerodynamic efficiency and tyre management. Weather can also have a major impact on the Belgian Grand Prix, as rain and changing track conditions are common features of racing in the Ardennes.
Belgian Grand Prix 2027 race format
The complete F1 Belgian Grand Prix 2027 weekend schedule will be announced with the official Formula 1 calendar. The exact timetable for practice, qualifying and the Grand Prix itself has not yet been confirmed.
Formula 1 will also confirm whether the Belgian round will use the Sprint format. Spa-Francorchamps has hosted Sprint weekends in previous F1 seasons.
Formula 1 teams and drivers
All teams entered in the 2027 Formula 1 World Championship will be eligible to compete in the Belgian Grand Prix. The final driver line-up will depend on team contracts and official entries for the season.
Spa-Francorchamps often produces close competition between the leading teams. Performance on the long straights, aerodynamic efficiency, tyre management and the ability to adapt to changing weather conditions can all influence the final result.
History of the Belgian Grand Prix
The Belgian Grand Prix has one of the longest histories in Formula 1. Spa-Francorchamps was developed as a racing venue in the 1920s, while the Belgian Grand Prix became part of the inaugural Formula 1 World Championship in 1950.
The original Spa circuit was dramatically longer than the modern layout and used public roads connecting Francorchamps, Malmedy and Stavelot. The original track measured almost 15 km.
Due to safety concerns, the Belgian Grand Prix was held at other venues on several occasions, including Nivelles-Baulers and Zolder. Spa-Francorchamps was later modernised and returned to the Formula 1 calendar as the permanent home of the Belgian round.
The race has been won by some of the greatest drivers in Formula 1 history, including Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
