About the FIBA Women's World Championship
The FIBA Women's World Championship is held every four years. In 1976, women's basketball was added to the Summer Olympic Games, and prior to that, the FIBA Women's World Championship was the most prestigious tournament for women's national teams.
FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2030
The FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2030 will take place in Tokyo, Japan, from November 26 to December 8, 2030. Japan will host the FIBA Women's World Cup for the first time after being awarded the hosting rights in April 2026.
The 2030 tournament will also mark a change in the competition's calendar. Starting in 2030, the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup will be held in November and December, with the new schedule designed to raise the tournament's global profile.
Participating Teams
The World Cup will continue to feature 16 national teams. The final field for 2030 will be determined through the FIBA qualification system. The 2030 World Cup Qualifying Tournaments are scheduled for March 2030, while the Pre-Qualifying Tournaments will take place from August 21 to 28, 2028.
Japan will qualify as the host nation, while the remaining teams will earn their places through the qualification process.
Japan as Host
The 2030 tournament will be the first FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup hosted by Japan. The event will also coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Japan Basketball Association (JBA).
Japan previously hosted the FIBA Men's Basketball World Cup in 2006 and staged one group of the 2023 Men's World Cup in Okinawa. The 2030 tournament will therefore mark the country's first time hosting the senior women's World Cup.
History of the Women's Basketball World Cup
The first Women's World Championship was held in Chile in 1953, with the United States winning the inaugural title. The Soviet Union dominated much of the competition during the following decades, winning five consecutive championships between 1959 and 1975.
The United States is the most successful team in the history of the competition. After winning the 2026 World Cup, the USA reached 12 titles and extended its winning streak to five consecutive championships. The United States defeated France 97-79 in the 2026 final, while Spain claimed the bronze medal.
