The Indian Ocean Islands Games are a regional multi-sport competition featuring athletes from the island nations and territories of the Indian Ocean. The Games are held every four years and bring together delegations from Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Madagascar, Mayotte, Réunion and the Maldives. The first edition was held in 1979.

Indian Ocean Islands Games 2027

The 12th Indian Ocean Islands Games will take place in the Comoros from August 10 to 19, 2027. The Comoros will host the Games for the first time in the history of the competition.

The 2027 program includes a range of sports, including athletics, swimming, football, basketball, handball, judo, badminton, boxing, cycling, weightlifting, wrestling, pétanque, taekwondo, tennis and table tennis. The final list of disciplines may be adjusted by the organizers.

Seven delegations are expected to participate in the Games:

  • Comoros;
  • Madagascar;
  • Mauritius;
  • Maldives;
  • Seychelles;
  • Mayotte;
  • Réunion.

The Indian Ocean Island Games is a multi-sport competition among the island nations and territories of the Indian Ocean. Hosted by the International Island Games Association, the Games are held every 4 years. More than 2000 athletes currently participate in the competition.

2023 Indian Ocean Island Games

The 11th edition of the Indian Ocean Island Gamеs will start on 23 August and end on 3 September 2023 in Madagascar. 2,000 athletes will take part in 17 sports. Countries participating in the Indian Ocean Island Games are:

  • The Comoros;
  • Madagascar;
  • Maldives;
  • Mauritius;
  • Mayotte;
  • Réunion;
  • Seychelles.

History of the Games' creation

The Indian Ocean Islands Games were established in 1979. The first edition was held in Réunion and featured athletes from four delegations: Comoros, Mauritius, Maldives and Réunion. Madagascar and Mayotte joined the competition later. The Games are held every four years and are intended to promote regional cooperation, friendship and sporting development among the islands of the Indian Ocean.

The previous editions were hosted by Réunion in 1979, Mauritius in 1985, Madagascar in 1990, Seychelles in 1993, Réunion in 1998, Mauritius in 2003, Madagascar in 2007, Seychelles in 2011, Réunion in 2015, Mauritius in 2019 and Madagascar in 2023. The 2027 edition will be the first to be hosted by the Comoros.

2031 Indian Ocean Island Games

The 2031 Indian Ocean Islands Games will be held in the Maldives. The decision to award the 2031 edition to the Maldives was made in 2023, when the International Games Council also selected the Comoros to host the 2027 Games. The exact dates, venues and sports program for the 2031 Games have not yet been announced.
