  • Arsenal — the team continues to challenge for the title and regularly competes near the top of the Premier League table.
  • Liverpool — the reigning champions from the 2025/26 season and one of the main contenders to retain the title.
  • Chelsea — a club with significant potential and ambitions to compete for the highest positions.

History of the English Football Championship

The modern Premier League was founded in 1992 after the leading English clubs broke away from the Football League. The inaugural 1992/93 season featured 22 teams.

The first goal in Premier League history was scored by Brian Deane of Sheffield United. Manchester United became the first Premier League champions, winning the title in the 1992/93 season.

In 1995, the number of participating clubs was reduced from 22 to 20. The 20-team format has remained in place ever since.

Since 2016, the Premier League has had no title sponsor, so the official name of the competition is simply Premier League.
