History of Royal Ascot Horse Racing
The history of Royal Ascot dates back to 1711, when Queen Anne selected an open area in Berkshire for the first Royal Ascot races. On 11 August, the first race meeting took place, featuring three races. The distance was four miles at the time; today, Royal Ascot races range from 1,200 to 2,400 metres (approximately one to one and a half miles).
Queen Elizabeth II was a great supporter of Royal Ascot. From 1945 onwards, she rarely missed the event and became one of its most iconic royal figures.
Legendary jockey Lester Piggott won 116 races at Royal Ascot during his career between 1952 and 1993.
Until 2001, the festival lasted four days, but a fifth day was added in 2002 to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
The Royal Ascot Gold Cup has traditionally been presented to the winner by the reigning monarch, adding to the prestige of this famous horse-racing event.
