What Makes the Match Unique?

The UEFA Super Cup is a prestigious clash between the winners of Europe's two major club competitions. The match determines the first European trophy of the new season and traditionally attracts significant attention from football fans.

The UEFA Super Cup is unique for several reasons:

  • The first European trophy of the season — teams begin the new football year competing for a major title.
  • A clash of champions — the winners of the Champions League and Europa League face each other.
  • A single match — since 1998, the UEFA Super Cup has been played as a single final.
  • Prestige and status — winning the trophy adds another European title to a club's history.
  • An exciting start to the season — the match is one of the first major events of the new football year.

In recent years, the UEFA Super Cup has produced plenty of dramatic moments. In 2019, Liverpool defeated Chelsea on penalties, while in 2024, Real Madrid beat Atalanta 2–0. In 2025, PSG came back from 0–2 down against Tottenham, equalised late in the match and won on penalties.

History of the UEFA Super Cup

The idea for the UEFA Super Cup emerged in 1972 following the success of Ajax Amsterdam, who dominated European football in the early 1970s. The first match between the holders of the European Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup was played in 1972 between Ajax and Rangers, although the competition was officially recognised by UEFA later.

The first official UEFA Super Cup took place in 1973, with the second leg played in January 1974. Initially, the competition was played over two legs, with each team hosting one match.

In 1984, the UEFA Super Cup was played as a single match for the first time. However, the one-match format became permanent only in 1998.

Since 1998, the UEFA Super Cup has been played as a single match at a neutral venue. Since 1999, it has featured the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup, which was later replaced by the UEFA Europa League.

In 2008, a Russian club won the UEFA Super Cup for the first time. Zenit St Petersburg defeated Manchester United 2–1.
