About the United Cup tennis tournament
United Cup is an international team tennis tournament in which national teams from different countries compete in men's and women's singles, as well as mixed doubles. The tournament is jointly organized with the participation of the ATP and WTA, bringing together leading players from both tours.
The first edition of the United Cup was held in 2023. The tournament takes place in Australia at the beginning of the calendar season on outdoor hard courts and traditionally precedes the Australian Open. However, the United Cup is an independent team competition rather than an official warm-up event for the Australian Open.
The tournament features 18 national teams. The teams are split between two cities — Perth and Sydney. Each team tie consists of one men's singles match, one women's singles match and one mixed doubles match.
United Cup 2027
The United Cup 2027 will take place from January 1 to 10, 2027, in Perth and Sydney, Australia. The tournament will be one of the first major events of the new tennis season. According to the official ATP calendar, it is a team event played on outdoor hard courts and featuring 18 national teams.
In the group stage, the 18 teams are divided into six groups of three. Three groups are played in Perth and three in Sydney. Within each group, teams play each other in a round-robin format.
Each team tie consists of three matches: men's singles, women's singles and mixed doubles. Singles matches are played as best-of-three sets with tie-breaks. Mixed doubles matches consist of two tie-break sets, with a deciding match tie-break played to 10 points if the score is 1-1.
The group winners advance to the quarter-finals. One additional quarter-final spot in each city goes to the best second-placed team. The quarter-final winners then advance to the semi-finals and final, which are held in Sydney.
Where will the United Cup 2027 be held?
In 2027, the tournament will once again be hosted by two Australian cities:
- Perth — group stage and quarter-finals;
- Sydney — group stage, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.
In Perth, matches are played at RAC Arena, while in Sydney they take place at Ken Rosewall Arena at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre.
United Cup and the Australian Open
The United Cup is held in Australia at the beginning of the new season and precedes the Australian Open. According to the 2027 calendar, there will be approximately one week between the end of the United Cup and the start of the first Grand Slam tournament of the season: the United Cup will conclude on January 10, while the Australian Open will begin on January 17.
The main feature of the United Cup is its combination of men's and women's tennis within a single team competition. This gives fans the opportunity to watch leading ATP and WTA players not only in singles matches but also competing together in mixed doubles.
