Australian motor racing history
The Australian Grand Prix has its origins in 1928. Between 1928 and 1984 there were 49 Australian Grand Prix races but they didn't form part of the World Championship. However, these races were similar in style to Formula One races, which featured world class racing drivers such as Alain Prost, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart and others.
The first Formula One Australian Grand Prix was held at the Adelaide Street Circuit in 1985. This circuit hosted the World Championship from 1985 to 1995. 1994 marked the most memorable race in Australian Grand Prix history. The clash between the two contenders for the world title, Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill. Schumacher won the world championship for the first time and controversy still rages about the incident.
In 1996, the Australian Grand Prix was moved to the Albert Park circuit.
