ICC Men's T20 World Cup is the premier international cricket tournament in the Twenty20 (T20) format, organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The tournament is held every two years and brings together national teams competing for the world title in one of the fastest and most dynamic formats of cricket.
In its current format, the World Cup features 20 national teams. The tournament combines a group stage with subsequent knockout rounds, culminating in the semi-finals and final.
ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2028
The 2028 ICC Men's T20 World Cup will be held in Australia and New Zealand from October 21 to November 19. The tournament will retain the 20-team format, but the ICC has approved a new competition structure.
In the group stage, the 20 teams will be divided into five groups of four. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 10 stage, where they will be divided into two groups of five.
The winners of the two Super 10 groups will qualify directly for the semi-finals. The remaining two semi-final places will be decided in a new Eliminators round, featuring the teams that finish second and third in the Super 10 groups. The tournament will then continue with the semi-finals and final.
At present, 12 teams have already secured their places at the 2028 World Cup: Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe.
The remaining eight places will be decided through the qualification pathway. A 16-team global qualifier will determine part of the field, while eight additional teams will qualify through regional qualification tournaments.
History of the Tournament
The first ICC Men's T20 World Cup was held in South Africa in 2007. India defeated Pakistan in the final to become the first T20 world champions.
Since then, the tournament has become one of the major events in international cricket. India, Pakistan, England, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Australia have all won the title.
In 2026, India became three-time world champions after defeating New Zealand in the final. India therefore became the most successful team in T20 World Cup history.
The ICC Men's T20 World Cup trophy is made of silver and rhodium. Its design represents the dynamic nature and movement of the ball in the T20 format.

ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2030
The next World Cup after the 2028 edition will be held in 2030. The tournament will be hosted by England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland. It will be the first men's T20 World Cup to be jointly hosted by these four nations.
