About the Japanese Grand Prix
The Japanese Grand Prix is a round of the Formula One World Championship. It has been held annually since 1976 with the exception of a break from 1978 to 1986 and 2020, 2021 due to the pandemic.
Japanese Grand Prix 2027
In 2027, the Japanese Grand Prix will once again take place at the legendary Suzuka Circuit. The race weekend will be held from April 9 to 11 and will be the fourth round of the Formula 1 season. For the first time in the history of the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, a Sprint is scheduled to take place.
Suzuka is one of the most iconic circuits in the championship. The 5.807-kilometer track has a unique figure-eight layout and features 18 corners, including the famous S-Curves and the high-speed 130R.
Formula 1 has extended its contract with the Japanese Grand Prix until 2029, ensuring that the race will remain on the calendar at least through that season. In recent years, the race has been held in spring, allowing fans to enjoy Japan's famous cherry blossom season as well.
Suzuka has traditionally been one of the key circuits in the championship when it comes to title battles. Over the history of the Japanese Grand Prix, 12 world champions have been crowned at the circuit, including Max Verstappen in 2022.
History of Motorsport in Japan
The Suzuka Circuit was built in 1962 and designed by Dutch engineer John Hugenholtz as a test track for Honda. Its distinctive crossing layout became one of the circuit's defining features.
The first Japanese Grands Prix as part of the Formula 1 World Championship were held in 1976 and 1977 at Fuji Speedway. After a ten-year absence, the Japanese Grand Prix returned to the calendar in 1987, this time at Suzuka. Gerhard Berger driving for Ferrari won the first Formula 1 race held at the circuit.
In 2007 and 2008, the Japanese Grand Prix was once again held at Fuji Speedway, after which Suzuka returned as the permanent venue from 2009.
Michael Schumacher has the most victories in the history of the Japanese Grand Prix, with six wins. Lewis Hamilton has won the race five times, while Sebastian Vettel has four victories.

In 2026, Kimi Antonelli won the Japanese Grand Prix for Mercedes. Oscar Piastri finished second, while Charles Leclerc took third place. The race was held over 53 laps.
In 2025, Max Verstappen won at Suzuka, while the previous year he also took first place at the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix.
Japanese Grand Prix 2028
The next Japanese Grand Prix after the 2027 season is scheduled for 2028, although the exact date of the race has not yet been announced. Suzuka has a contract with Formula 1 through 2029, so the Japanese Grand Prix is expected to remain on the calendar in 2028 as well.
