About Next Generation Tennis Tournament

The Next Generation Tennis Tournament (Next Gen ATP Finals) is a unique annual competition that brings together the world's best young tennis players. This tournament was created in 2017 to support the development of new ATP stars.

Next Gen ATP Finals 2026

The 2026 tournament will take place from December 9–13 in Reggio Calabria, Italy. Matches will be played at PalaCalafiore. The event will return to Italy for the first time since 2022, when Milan hosted the tournament.

The field will consist of eight qualified players who meet the age requirements and earn their places based on their season results. The total prize pool will be $2 million.

Tournament Format

The eight players will be divided into two groups of four. Each player will compete in three round-robin matches. The group winners will advance to the semifinals, where they will face the runners-up from the opposite group. The semifinal winners will meet in the final.

Matches are played in a best-of-five-set format. Each set is played to four games, with a tiebreak at 3–3. At 40–40, the No-Ad scoring system is used, meaning the next point decides the game.

Next Generation Tournament History

The Next Gen ATP Finals has come to symbolize a new approach to professional tennis. Since its inception in 2017, the tournament has served as a springboard for young players, paving the way for success on the main stage.

In 2017-2023, the tournament was traditionally held in Milan, Italy. Athletes could not be older than 21 years. Starting in 2023, the competition moved to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where it will be held until 2027. Also, the age of players is now 20.

Innovation is one of the key features of Next Gen. The electronic Hawk-Eye Live calling system, a 25-second pitch counter and shortened breaks between games have all been tested here. Many of these innovations will be incorporated into other competitions.

Experimental Rules

The Next Gen ATP Finals serves as a testing ground for new elements of professional tennis. Over the years, the tournament has featured shortened sets to four games, No-Ad scoring, electronic line calling, video review and other technological innovations.

Some of these concepts have subsequently been considered or introduced at other ATP events.
