History of the Spanish Super Cup
The modern Spanish Super Cup was established in 1982. The tournament brought together the winners of La Liga and the Copa del Rey. Initially, the competition was played over two legs, while from 1994 the tournament was moved to the beginning of the season.
The competition has earlier historical predecessors. In 1940, the Champions Cup was held between the winners of the league and cup, while the Eva Duarte Cup was played from 1947 to 1953. However, the official history of the modern Spanish Super Cup begins in 1982.
Since the 2019/20 season, the Spanish Super Cup has been played in a Final Four format, with four teams competing in two semifinals and a final.
