History

The history of the US Open dates back to 1881, when the first US National Championship in men's singles was held in Newport, Rhode Island. Women's competitions were added to the programme in 1887, with 17-year-old Ellen Hansell becoming the first women's champion.

In 1915, the tournament moved to New York, where it was held at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills. In 1968, the championship became open to professional players and adopted its modern name, the US Open.

The US Open is the only Grand Slam tournament to have been held every year without interruption since its foundation. Today, the tournament takes place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens, New York.
