About the Women's European Volleyball Championship

The Women's European Volleyball Championship is a biennial international volleyball tournament for women's national teams in Europe. The tournament is held under the auspices of the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV). The current European champions are Türkiye, who won their second consecutive title in 2026 after defeating Italy 3–2 in the final.

 A similar event among men is called the Men's European Volleyball Championship. The men's and women's championships are held in the same year, around the same time.

Women's European Volleyball Championship 2028

The CEV Women's EuroVolley 2028 will be held after the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. According to the current CEV calendar, the tournament is provisionally scheduled for August 18 to September 3, 2028, although the final dates may still be adjusted.

The tournament will feature 24 national teams. The teams will be divided into four groups of six, followed by the knockout stage, including the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the bronze and gold medal matches.

EuroVolley 2028 Host Countries

CEV plans to stage the tournament across four host countries. Two hosts have been officially confirmed so far:

  • Spain — group-stage matches will be held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria;
  • Slovakia — the group stage is planned to take place in Šamorín at the x-bionic sphere sports complex.

The other two host countries have not yet been announced. CEV is continuing discussions with national federations interested in hosting the tournament.

Who Has Qualified?

The first participants in EuroVolley 2028 are already known. The four host nations will qualify automatically. In addition, four teams earned places through the 2026 CEV European League: Sweden, Slovenia, Hungary and Slovakia.

The 2026 EuroVolley winner also receives a place at the 2028 tournament. Four more spots will be awarded through the 2027 European League, while the remaining places will be determined based on the European ranking following the 2027 VNL and European League competitions.

History of the Championship

The first women's European volleyball championship was held in 1949 in Prague. Seven national teams took part, with the Soviet Union becoming the first European champions. Since 1975, the tournament has been held every two years.

Eight national teams have won the EuroVolley title throughout its history. Russia, including the Soviet Union's results, is the most successful team with 19 titles, 13 of which were won by the Soviet Union. Serbia and Italy have won three titles each, while Poland and East Germany have two championships apiece. Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia and the Netherlands have each won the tournament once.

In 2026, Türkiye won its second consecutive European title by defeating Italy in the final. Türkiye therefore enters the 2028 tournament as the reigning European champion.
