About the Brazilian Championship A Series

The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A (Brazilian Championship A Series, Brasileirão, Brasileirão Assaí) is the Brazilian professional league for men’s football clubs. 20 teams participate in the championship. The season lasts from May to December. Each team plays all opponents twice. The teams are ranked in the standings according to wins, points and goals scored. The club with the most points wins the season.

2026 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A

The Brazilian football championship, known as the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, is considered one of the most prestigious national leagues in the world. In 2026, the season has already started on January 28 and will run until December 2. Matches are held across the country — from Brasília to major football hubs such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Key fixtures, including classic derbies between Flamengo and Fluminense, as well as matches involving Palmeiras, continue to attract millions of fans.

Favorites and predictions

The Brazilian league is known for its intense competition, and the 2026 season is no exception. Flamengo remains one of the top contenders thanks to its strong squad depth. Palmeiras and Atlético Mineiro consistently deliver solid performances, especially at home.

Special attention should also be given to São Paulo and Internacional, both capable of challenging for top positions and influencing the title race.

History of the Championship

Campeonato Brasileiro Série A was officially founded in 1971, although the Brazilian team had previously participated in several international tournaments. By 1970, the Brazilian team had won the FIFA World Cup three times.

In 1987, CBF announced a few weeks before the next Campeonato Brasileiro Série A that they could not host the tournament. This unexpected decision left the competition without an organizer. As a consequence, 13 of the most popular Brazilian clubs decided to take action. They formed a league, the Club of the 13 (Clube dos 13), to organize their own championship.

Since 2003, the Olympic system was abolished. This led to a full-fledged league structure with a two-round system for determining the national winner.

Since 1971, the Sport Club Corinthians Paulista from São Paulo and Clube de Regatas do Flamengo from Rio de Janeiro have had the most trophies in the history of the Brazilian official championships. Both teams have won seven trophies each.
