History of the Copa Libertadores de América
The Copa Libertadores is the premier club tournament in South America, comparable in prestige to the UEFA Champions League. Founded in 1960, it brings together the strongest teams on the continent.
The first winner was Uruguayan Peñarol, and in the following years, clubs from Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil dominated. Santos with Pele brought Brazil its first trophy in 1963, and Independiente set a record by winning the Cup seven times, including four in a row (1972–1975).
Over time, the tournament has expanded and its winners have come from many different countries. In 1989, Atletico Nacional became the first Colombian champion, and in 2008, LDU Quito brought victory to Ecuador. In 2019, the final was changed to a single match on a neutral field.
Today, the Copa Libertadores is one of the most spectacular tournaments in the world, attracting millions of spectators. It continues to write history, delighting fans with dramatic matches and new legends.
